Image reads: Statement

I create artwork by carefully adhering embroidery thread to the surface of paper. The subject of my current body of work includes plants, landscapes, and natural formations; primarily those found in the desert. Drawing on nature for inspiration, my work emphasizes light/shadow, shape, and color.

I am drawn to the meditative quality of thread painting. The process becomes rhythmic as each thread is laid in place by hand, together creating a cohesive image full of intricate detail. To the viewer, the medium may not be readily apparent from a distance; it becomes increasingly visible as one draws nearer and reveals details that cannot be seen otherwise. The embroidery thread reflects light, highlighting the shape it takes. As the piece interacts with light from different angles, the piece is transformed.

My color choices are meant to capture the contrast of light and shadow as well as explore the relationships between colors. The shapes and colors found in nature continue to amaze me; I am inspired to capture the essence of them through this meticulous medium.
